Alcohol addiction can cause serious health problems, both physical and mental.

Alcohol addiction is a problem for millions of people around the world.

How to take the first step?

  • Recognize that you have a problem and it is the most important one.
  • Seek support
  • Learn about treatment options: Research the different types of treatment available.
  • Recovery is a process, and there can be relapses. The important thing is to keep moving forward.

In this sense, there is a surgery that can help with this recovery process from alcohol addiction. Thus, for the first time this type of surgery is performed in China, an effective process to combat the terrible addiction.

Certainly, it is an addiction that ends the physical integrity of the person and the emotional tranquility of their family members.

According to the South China Morning Post, a 36-year-old male patient, with fifteen years of alcoholism, underwent surgery to implant a chip, consequently, to eliminate his addiction to alcohol.

This patient was part of a clinical trial at the Hunan Brain Hospital. In addition, the surgery was supervised by Hao Wei, former vice president of the United Nations International Narcotics Control Board and an expert on substance abuse and addiction mechanisms at the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South China University.

After the chip implantation process, which takes just five minutes, the chip releases naltrexone, a substance used in the treatment of addictions to prevent relapses.

Consequently, this substance is then absorbed by the body and received by sensors in the brain. That is why the chip is expected to deal with addiction for up to five months, Hao said.

According to a study by the scientific publication The Lancet, China statistically recorded approximately 700,000 deaths from causes related to alcohol addiction in 2017, 93% of which were men.

This advance in medicine is of utmost importance. In addition, knowing the unfavorable effects of alcoholism, since this disorder controls the patient, leading him to drink uncontrollably and puts his health or safety at risk.

The disorder associated with alcohol consumption can be mild, moderate or severe, these are the signs and symptoms:

  • Not controlling the amount of alcohol you drink

  • Spending a lot of time drinking.
  • Feeling cravings for alcohol and not being able to stop.
