An arrhythmia is a disorder of the heart rhythm. In other words, they are alterations in the functioning of the electrical network of the heart that modify the heart rate and have an impact on the pumping function of this organ, decreasing its effectiveness.
An arrhythmia may not cause harm, be a sign of other heart problems or an immediate danger to your health.
Arrhythmias are divided according to a slower heart rhythm (bradyarrhythmias) or faster (tachyarrhythmias). They also differ, depending on where they originate, in ventricular arrhythmias or supraventricular arrhythmias (in the atria).
The most serious type of arrhythmia is atrial fibrillation (3%), which occurs when the muscle fibers contract individually very quickly and in an uncoordinated manner. It is a very common reason for medical consultation in the elderly, and may be the cause of arterial embolism or an ischemic stroke. In some cases, such as ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation, the risk of death is immediate and therefore requires specialized urgent care.
