This type of dermatitis is a skin problem that develops in the area of skin covered by the baby’s diaper.
It is an irritative and inflammatory process caused by the conditions of humidity, friction and contact with urine, feces and other substances, such as plastic detergents, perfumes or other compounds.
It affects both sexes equally and, in general terms, usually occurs more frequently between six and twelve months of age. Similarly, the incidence of diaper rash is greater in children with diarrhea.
All this produces damage to the epidermis, which leads to the loss of the barrier function exerted by the skin and causes a greater susceptibility to skin irritation. the cause of the irritation is unknown, it can be considered that the irritative agent is not unique, but results from the mixture of different factors that influence the development of the process, such as friction, occlusion, excessive humidity or the increase of pH in the skin of the diaper area.
To prevent this type of irritation is essential to maintain good hygiene of the area, ensuring that it remains always dry and clean. It is recommended that warm water or neutral soap is used and the use of the products with perfumes, talcs or similar chemical compounds is discouraged.
