Astigmatism is a very common ocular disorder, characterized by an alteration in the curvature of the cornea, which causes a refractive error in the eye, which results in the blurred perception of the images.

People with astigmatism have unfocused vision because their cornea is abnormally curved.

Patients with astigmatism see blurred, do not distinguish the details well and perceive the distorted figures, both near and far. As a result of this incorrect vision, they may suffer from headaches or dizziness, since the eye forces the muscles to try to correct the defect.

It is easy to diagnose and in mild cases usually no treatment is necessary. However, it can be corrected – although not eliminated – with the use of glasses or contact lenses, or resorting to laser surgery to reduce it or make it disappear more effectively.

The origin of this condition, which is usually congenital (present from birth), is unknown and frequently appears associated with other eye disorders such as myopia (myopic astigmatism) and hyperopia (hypermetropic astigmatism).

Astigmatism can be considered corneal (when the cornea is the one that has an irregular shape), or lenticular (when it is the shape of the lens or lens that is distorted).
