Bionic prosthetics is an achievement of bionic medicine generated through bionic engineering.

Bionic prosthetics help in the replacement of damaged limbs and organs by creating bionic prosthetics and devices. As a result, they mimic and enhance biological functions.

Prosthetics improve the quality of life of people who have lost a limb by providing movement and independence.

These devices have helped people get back to work and feel accepted in their daily lives.

A prosthesis is a device designed to replace a missing body part or to make a body part work better. Examples: Missing or diseased eyes, arms, hands, legs, or joints. That is why they are commonly replaced by prosthetic devices.

Bionic implants differ from pure prosthetics by mimicking the original function very closely, or even surpassing it.

Prostheses and devices can last from 7 to 15 years, and in exceptional cases, they can even last a lifetime.

Lower limb bionic devices are innovative devices and have certainly revolutionized the lives of people with arm or hand amputations.

Bionic prostheses are made up of sensors, processors, inclinometers, accelerometers, actuators and complex control algorithms. Due to all these parts, the prosthesis has a certain intelligence. It also makes more natural movements, imitating the movements of the musculoskeletal system.

Bionic devices, unlike traditional prostheses, are a type of prosthesis designed with state-of-the-art technological systems.

A Bionic Leg: This bionic prosthesis comes implemented with a series of motors, joints, sensors and computer processors that collect and interpret nerve impulses from the brain. Consequently, it translates them into movements that allow the person to perform the tasks of their daily life.

The prosthesis works by attaching three electrodes to the muscles, which detect the movement of the muscle contraction and transform it into an electrical signal.

Then, a micro-controller receives the signals that were processed and purified, in order to condition the movement in the bionic hand.

There are some types of sensors that are used in a bionic arm prosthesis. That is why, they are functionally based on the detection of proximity of the tendons by means of the infrared reluctance sensor that is located on the skin. In addition, they measure the distances through algorithms, which in the end will result in mechanical movements.

Advantages of using bionic prostheses:
  • After an amputation, the patient has a feeling of still having his or her limb, whatever it may be.
  • The bionic prosthesis provides security and makes this pain disappear.
  • Providing independence and returning the touch and functions of the replaced body parts.
Types of prostheses:
  • Hip.
  • Elbow.
  • Shoulder.
  • Meniscus.
  • Knee.
  • Ankle.

In short, bionic medicine has experienced an unprecedented boom in recent years, especially in the field of prosthetics. Certainly, they represent a milestone in modern medicine, offering hope and new possibilities to people with disabilities.
