Choking happens when someone is suddenly blocked by the air passages and cannot breathe.
It may be caused due to poor swallowing of food or clogging of objects.
The type of action to reverse it must be different if it is a partial choking or if it is a total choking, therefore, the first thing is to recognize each case:
- Partial choking: we will realize that the routes are not completely blocked because the person will cough and make noises, and we will hear their forced breathing. It will take the hands to the throat, unequivocal sign of choking.
- Total choking: the person will not be able to make any noise since the foreign object will not allow the entry or exit of the air. Normally the victim is unable to breathe, his skin begins to turn pale at first and later turns blue, he can become agitated and lose consciousness. Without proper care, you may die.
The technique to perform it is the following:
- Stand behind the person while standing.
- Put your arms around the waist: the right hand in the form of a closed fist on the upper part of the abdomen of the affected person (at the level of the mouth of the stomach, where the ribs meet), and the left hand taking the fist, arms around the base of the thorax.
- Compress the abdomen abruptly and strongly upwards with both hands.
- Suspend compression.
- Repeat the maneuver as many times as necessary until the person expels the foreign body from his throat or loses consciousness.
- If you lose consciousness, ask for help immediately to the emergency telephone by briefly and clearly communicating what happened.

- In children over one year old, the same procedure is used, but the fist is placed over the navel of the child with the thumb side towards the abdomen.
- If a person is alone and suffers from drowning by objects that obstruct the airway (trachea), the Heimlich Maneuver can be used on oneself, nailing or positioning the weight of the body on the back of a chair, in this way the pressure inside the chest it is increased rapidly, forcing the object to leave the airway.
- If the above steps are followed correctly, a choking can be handled, but emergency services should be notified if the victim does not expel the suffocating object and loses consciousness.
- Likewise, some rest of the object or food that caused the obstruction may have remained and may cause discomfort afterwards. If the affected person has swallowing or swallowing problems, coughs frequently, etc., it is advisable to go to the Emergency Department to be examined by a doctor.
What not to do
- Abdominal compression can cause injuries, so it should not be performed on people who are not drowning.
- It is not recommended to administer first aid if the person is coughing hard and can speak, since a strong cough can dislodge the object.
