The BA.5 omicron subvariant of the coronavirus is growing faster than all the others; the BA.5 variant is more contagious than its predecessors, but less dangerous. Like other omicron subvariants, infections with BA.5 are milder than infections with other Covid strains. The period of time between infection and symptoms of the onset of this variant is shorter.
Nobody is totally protected against BA.5, despite the reinforcements against Covid, new infections are possible. Although it is important to note that there have been fewer deaths and hospitalizations due to severity, because people have created antibodies from the vaccines.
Infections in vaccinees are becoming more common as new mutations continue to appear.
People who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 or who have recently become ill with another variant are at risk of becoming infected with BA.5. This is because when a different variant of COVID-19 is presented, the antibodies do not recognize the new variant very well because the virus has acquired alterations, which makes it difficult for the immune system to quickly search for and block the new variant of the virus.
The most common symptoms of BA.5 infections are fever, runny nose, cough, sore throat, muscle pain, and fatigue.
Although the worst of this pandemic is over, we must recognize that this disease is not over. That is why the experts affirm the strength of this variant and it seems that no country will escape this new BA.5 omicron strain, unless another subvariant capable of replacing it comes along. For this reason, we must take care of ourselves by wearing a face mask, opt for outdoor activities and get vaccinated, without returning to confinement.
