Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) or systemic exertional intolerance disease (SEID), is a chronic and complex disease characterized by persistent fatigue and the presence of of cognitive difficulties, without a clear cause.

Currently, it is recognized that it is not a psychological or psychiatric disease, but rather an organic-based disorder, the exact causes of which are still unknown.

SYMPTOM

It can gradually affect the immune, neurological, cardiovascular and endocrine systems.

Its noxious quirk is:

  • Cause intense fatigue or fever
  • Unrestful sleep
  • Intolerance to light (photophobia)
  • To sound (hyperacusis)
  • To changes in temperature
  • Headache
  • Muscle and joint pain,
  • Permanent flu-like feeling
  • Chronic pharyngitis,
  • Concentration difficulties
  • Loss of recent memory
  • Spatial disorientation
  • Intolerance to emotional stress and physical activity.
  • Those affected often state that they feel as if they have contracted “a flu that never goes away.”

There are cases in which the symptoms disappear for some time, days or weeks, but the disease is chronic and recurring, and only a small percentage of patients recover completely. Normally, the longer time passes without improvement, the worse the prognosis for recovery. The age of the patient is also an important factor, and younger patients have better prospects for recovery.[

Currently, a number of studies have shown that oxidative stress is a component of the disease, although it has not been determined whether oxidative damage is the cause or the effect.

TREATMENT

Treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome begins with the identification and treatment of associated or underlying conditions and relief of symptoms, the most common of which are sleep disorders, depression, and pain. Patients need to take rest periods when necessary and practice relaxation techniques. And the practice of gradual physical exercise.

Diet plays an important role in the development of CFS symptoms.
