The akinetopsia pathology is the inability to perceive moving objects, for this reason it affects the sense of sight of the person who suffers from it.

Acinetopsia, also known as akinetopsia or movement blindness, consists of a neurological disorder that affects the sense of sight. It is said that akinetopsia induces, in those who suffer from it, an inability to perceive movement through sight.
Acinetopsia is the inability to perceive movement. This disorder means that we are not able to appreciate movement in what we see.
The origin of akinetopsia is an abnormal functioning or interruption of activity in the area of the cortex that is located in the central area of the temporal lobe.
Our sight works like a camcorder that makes thousands of frames of what is around it, while our brain projects the “movie” in our mind. However, what happens when this function is altered? In these cases, akinetopsia appears, a disorder in which the person has difficulties perceiving movement. People with akinetopsia also see their visuomotor skills disturbed. Since they do not perceive their own movements well, tasks such as walking and moving or reaching objects can be really complicated.
This condition can present various degrees of severity, which vary both in the severity of the symptoms and in the level of blindness it causes in the person.
There are two different types of akinetopsia:
1. Fine or discrete Acinetopsia: presents milder symptoms and they report experiencing enormous discomfort.
2. Gross akinetopsia: also known as coarse akinetopsia. The person is completely unable to perceive the movement in its entirety. This means that the person can only see a static world in which for an instant the object or person is in one place and at a different time. They tend to have numerous problems performing their daily tasks normally.
Daily activities such as holding a conversation are highly complicated as the patient is unable to perceive changes in the movement of facial expressions. Likewise, daily routines, such as crossing the street, become something very dangerous; since it is not possible to perceive the movement of cars.
In order to compensate for these difficulties, people train their hearing, in this way, through the sense of listening they can, for example, calculate the distance of moving objects.
One of the causes of this disorder may be a lesion caused in the posterior area of the visual cortex, likewise, such as the consumption of certain antidepressants or hallucinogens or some diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Treatment:
There are currently no specific treatments for akinetopsia. In cases in which this disease is caused by the consumption of psychoactive drugs, the interruption of their consumption should eliminate the symptoms of this condition.
Brain surgery is a dangerous option and is used to try to eliminate akinetopsia in those cases in which there is an underlying brain lesion.
