Lactobacillus acidophilus is considered a probiotic or bacteria beneficial to humans.

This type of bacteria inhabit the intestines (and in the vagina of mammals) along with 400 other species of bacteria and yeast. Its presence helps to maintain the balance in the diversity of bacterial organisms and protects from the harmful effect of other microorganisms. It is used as a probiotic, or as “friendly bacteria.”

Actobacillus acidophilus or lactobacillus acidophilus, is a bacterium of the genus Lactobacillus. It is used together with Streptococcus thermophilus in the production of yogurt. The bacteria grows easily in media much more acidic than those ideal for other microorganisms and grows in optimal conditions at about 45 ºC.

The degradation of nutrients made by this microorganism produces lactic acid, acetic acid, hydrogen peroxide and other byproducts that create a hostile environment for other undesirable organisms. L. acidophilus consumes the nutrients of many other microorganisms by entering into competition with them and controlling, by the decrease of nutrients, the excessive development of these.

During digestion, it helps in the production of niacin, folic acid, vitamin K and vitamin B6. Some studies show that L. acidophilus can help deconjugation and separation of amino acids by bile acids, which can later be recycled by the body.

The use of lactobacillus acidophilus can cause a sufficient increase in the production and intestinal absorption of vitamin K which can decrease the effectiveness of warfarin.
