A chatbot is a software based on Artificial Intelligence capable of having a conversation in real time by text or voice.

Depending on the use they have, they can be of three types:

  • Linear conversational
  • Non-linear conversational
  • Hybrid conversational

Chatbots with smart and sophisticated algorithms can diagnose health problems quickly and conveniently, allowing patients to seek medical advice without leaving home. For those with mobile devices or internet access, chatbots are available to offer assistance 24/7.

Relying on this type of help can be very beneficial for anyone who has medical problems or who simply wants to access personal health care. They not only provide emotional support, but also the next steps patients need to address their health problems and conditions.

At UCLA, researchers merged chatbot technology with AI to develop a Virtual Interventional Radiologist (VIR). It was designed to help patients diagnose themselves and doctors to diagnose their patients. This year we anticipate similar projects and developments in the field of AI symptom-checking chatbots for healthcare.

The goal of these guidelines is to help AI developers and engineers design and produce safe and reliable AI/ML technologies for healthcare.

As the number of health chatbots multiplies rapidly, the new trend is projected towards where the health chat industry is heading.
