British bacteriologist. He is interested in the study of bacteria and in 1922 discovers the lysozyme, substance with antibacterial effects, present in tears, saliva and egg albumin. In 1928, he continued to study lysozyme and discovered penicillin by chance. In 1939 he discovered that the Moho penicillium notatum acts on germs. However, it is not enough to deliver the process of penicillin purification because it lacks the techniques. The application of penicillin in a human being is done in 1941. Receives the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1945, shared with Florey and Chain.
