A compress is defined as a fine cloth or gauze that, folded several times to form a strip, is used to contain hemorrhages, cover wounds, apply some medication or local heat, or to absorb menstrual flow, in which case it is commonly called a towel sanitary.

The sterilized surgical compresses are essential medical supplies in operating rooms to absorb body fluids and maintain the best visualization of the surgical area or for the drying of the hands after washing.

There are many types and brands, however, one of the most widely used are ring laparotomy compresses, which are made with 100 absorbent cotton. They have a ring to facilitate its use and counting during surgical procedures and have a barium filament in one of its corners in order to facilitate its detection through x-rays in the case that by carelessness of the surgeon one becomes inside the cavity.
